Dependant on what I have observed and skim in other resources, the oval (P) evidence mark was not released till 1908. Previous to that time, Winchester marked “OF” (outdoors fitted) on the bottom from the barrel under the forend inventory for the mail get barrels. I have see numerous of them on Product 1885 One Shot Rifles that predate 1908.

Also, you fellas have probably already witnessed this information but Listed below are scans in the 1899 Winchester Memorandum describing the marking system to the underside with the barrels (at that time).
